Our Beginning

Founded in 1979 by Peter R. and Carol Beukema, Suburban Inns develops, owns, and operates five hotels in Michigan: the Hampton Inn of Holland, the Holiday Inn Express of Holland, the Holiday Inn Express of Grand Rapids SW/Grandville, the Holiday Inn of Midland, and Courtyard Marriott of Holland. Suburban Inns also owns and manages Big E's Sports Grill in Holland and Midland, Michigan as well as Sharkee's Bar and Grill in Holland, Michigan.

Grant Hirst, while he was our Assistant General Manager at the Holiday Inn of Midland, won IHG's Best of the Best Guest Experience Champion of the Year for Holiday Inn. Grant, who is now our General Manager at the Courtyard by Marriott Holland Downtown, was named as Hotel Magazines "30 GMs to Watch List".

Peter R. Beukema


Peter R. Beukema and his wife Carol founded Suburban Inns, a family owned and operated hotel management company, in 1979. With over 30 years in the hospitality industry, Beukema continues to build top-quality and award-winning hotels throughout Michigan. He has owned and operated hotels that have successfully flown flags under some of the top brands and franchises in the hospitality industry.

Peter D. Beukema CHA

Chief Executive Officer

Peter Beukema is the Chief Executive Officer for Suburban Inns. Peter oversees the Operations, Company Expansion, Sales, Marketing, and Information Technology.

Peter has become extremely active in the community and in the industry by serving on the IHG Owners Association Board of Directors, Holland's Smart Zone Board. Peter also Chairs the IHG Rewards Club Committee for the IHG Owners Association. His past involvement includes serving on Holland's Tulip Time Board of Directors, working with Michigan Lodging Association, and and serving a three-year term (2009-2012) on the Board of Directors for the Bayshore Yacht Club.

Beukema attended Northwood University in Florida and then returned to Michigan where he plays an integral role in the expansion of the family business. He is married to his wife Michelle and has four amazing kids. Peter's hobbies include flying, boating, scuba diving, and losing golf balls.

Jessica Babcock

Vice President of Human Resources

Jessica Babcock has been employed by Suburban Inns for over ten years. In those years, she has gained experience in all facets of hospitality operations from working at the front desk to managing a kitchen to managing a hotel. Today, she is the Vice President of Human Resources for Suburban Inns.

Babcock graduated from Grand Valley State University with a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management and a minor in Business. She also holds a degree from Davenport University in Human Resource Management.

Outside of her employment with Suburban Inns, Jessica also completed an internship in food and beverage with the West Michigan Whitecaps and managed the front desk of the Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge for the Xanterra Parks and Resorts.

Tom Welling

Vice President of Developments and Facilities

Tom is the Director of Development and Facilities for Suburban Inns. He is focused on supporting the design, development, and construction of new properties. He also supports the ongoing maintenance of all of the existing properties.

Prior to joining Suburban Inns, Welling held management positions with multiple construction companies over the past eighteen years. He has managed the construction of projects that range from surgery centers to heavy industrial facilities to medical offices to restaurant and hotel facilities. Welling holds a BSE from the University of Michigan and has served in the United States Navy. He is married and has three sons.

Randy Riemersma

Sr. Vice President of Finance

Randy received his Associate Degree from Davenport University and his BSBA Degree from Davenport University. Randy has worked for Carpenter Paper CO. performing all facets of their accounting and management area for thirty-one years. Randy started with Suburban Inns in 2004 taking charge of the accounting department with responsibility for all facets of the accounting for Suburban Inns.

Garrick Papp

Vice President of Finance

Mr. Garrick D. Papp serves as Vice President of Finance for Suburban Inns. Mr. Papp has been Vice President of Finance since October 2016. Prior to joining Suburban Inns, Mr. Papp's career was spent in financial services, automotive, and healthcare. Mr. Papp holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from Walsh College.

Bob Flavin

Corporate Director of IT/Communications

Bob Flavin is the Corporate Director of IT/Communications for Suburban Inns. Flavin is responsible for all corporate communications and I.T. infrastructure. He leads in the development of marketing plans, promotional items, and IT system upgrades for the company's portfolio. 

Flavin joined the Suburban Inns team in June of 2010 as a Guest Service Representative at the Holiday Inn Express of Holland, and he was selected as the Communications Director just a few months later. In 2011, he added to his role by taking on the day-to-day IT needs of the properties. Bob served on the programming committee for the Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Michigan from 2010-2013. This prestigious group has been ranked in ABA's “Top 100 Events” for over twenty years. Flavin also served on the Holland Young Professionals Board of Directors for 4 years including being the President of the organization from 2015-2016. 

Before his time at Suburban Inns, Flavin was a guest services, marketing, and video production intern for Gull Lake Ministries in Hickory Corners, Michigan. He earned his degree in Communications from Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

Brogan Spaulding

Corporate Director of Human Resources

Brogan Spaulding joined the Suburban Inns team in 2015 following his Graduation from Ferris State University. He left Ferris with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a focus in Human Resources Management, as well as a Minor in Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

Brogan oversees the finalization of Payroll, various day-to-day human resources activities, and is a certified American Red Cross CPR Instructor. Before working with Suburban Inns, he spent time working in both the restaurant and golf industry while completing his education.

Ken Arens

Corporate Director of Revenue Management

Ken Arens graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in business management from Davenport University. Prior to entering the hospitality industry, Ken spent 25 years with Haworth in warehousing and warehousing management systems. He has been with the Suburban Inns team for 8 years and prior to becoming the Director of Revenue Management he was the General Manager of the Hampton Inn of Holland.

Ken has been married to his wife Holly for 35 years and has three kids and four grandkids. In his spare time he enjoys trying and making craft beers, hiking, and coming up with amazing food dishes.

Lori Varner

Corporate Director of Sales

Lori Varner has been an employee at Suburban Inns for fifteen years. Her prior experience includes working for Arlington Hospitality as Regional Sales Director and Director of Motor Coach Marketing. She was responsible for sales and marketing for sixty hotels in sixteen states. 

Varner had a career in radio broadcasting for seven plus years and has a degree in broadcasting from Delta College and Central Michigan University. She currently is involved in the Holland Rotary Noon Club as well as board member for West Michigan Red Cross. She is past board member and President of the Holland Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Brandon Hamstra

Payroll Administrator

Brandon Hamstra joined the Suburban Inns team in 2016 as a Night Auditor for the Courtyard by Marriott in Holland. He currently oversees all daily payroll responsibilities and other various day to day activities for Human Resources. Before joining Suburban Inns he worked as an advisor for Baker College and worked various jobs in hotels for Vail Resorts and Holland America.

Brandon graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Hospitality Business focusing in Hotel and Resort Management. He is currently attending Davenport University pursuing a Master's in Accounting.

Kathleen Kooyers

Executive Assistant - Accounts Receivable

Kathleen Kooyers came to Suburban Inns in March of 2016. Her prior experience includes working in a variety of environments ranging from paralegal, health care, direct sales, to marketing and accounting. She has worked in marketing positions at Steelcase and Haworth and international marketing with Japanese transplants for Magna Donnelly. She developed accounting and group sales experience working for 8 years at the West Michigan Whitecaps. On weekends she works front desk at Cook Valley Estates ~ a premier retirement community.

Kathleen graduated from Grand Valley State University with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. She also possesses a Master’s Degree in Business from Aquinas College with a concentration on Information Systems.

Catherine Novak

Executive Assistant - Accounts Payable

Catherine Novak started her journey with Suburban Inns in April of 2010 as a Guest Service Representative at the Holiday Inn Express in Grandville. Her experiences within the company include Front Desk Manager, General Manager, and Guest Experience Manager. In 2016, Catherine joined the accounting team as Accounts Payable.

Catherine graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in History focusing in Museum Studies. Prior to working for Suburban Inns she worked Museum Educator for the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art.

Kassi Fontaine

Operations Administrative Assistant

Kassi Fontaine started her hospitality career in 2009 at the front desk of the Holiday Inn Express in South Haven, Michigan. In 2013, she joined the Suburban Inns team by working front desk at the Holiday Inn Express in Holland, Michigan. In 2014, Kassi became the Operations Administrative Assistant to Peter Beukema.

Kassi holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Ferris State University.

Sara Matheka

Sales Manager

Sara Matheka joined the Suburban Inns team in 2016 as the sales manager for our Holland and Grandville hotels. She has worked in the Hospitality field for over ten years.

Sara graduated from Grand Valley State University with a bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science with an emphasis in Psychology. She volunteers as a mentor at Compassionate Heart Ministries in Zeeland, Michigan. Her first job was with Suburban Inns back in 2004, and she's thrilled to be back!
